This class focuses on defining the genre of memoir by exploring its relationship to the truth starting with a discussion of James Frey's exaggerations and fabrications in A Million Little Pieces. In our search to find the line between truth and lying in this slippery genre, we'll also examine retrospective narrative and the act of reconstructing the past. Instructor Megan Williams, Ph.D., invites you to share moments in your own writing where you struggle with the relationship between fact and fiction as we examine memoir as an expansive genre and what it means to tell the truth in your writing. Williams' memoir One Bad Mother was published in September of 2024 and was a finalist for the 2024 Pacific Award in Memoir.
